OIL SEALS

Fitting Instructions

bullet

Oil seals (and the shaft they are fitted to ) MUST be lubricated with Petroleum Jelly before installation. Failure to do this will result in failure of the seal as the sealing lip will be burnt on start-up.

bullet

Use the right type of seal for the application. Not all seals of the same size are the same. As an example, some are designed for left hand rotation and others for right hand rotation. Also different materials are required for different applications.

bullet

A sleeve must be fitted to a shaft before installation if the shaft contains a sharp edge, splines or a keyway.

bullet

If the seal is fitted to a housing plate and then assembled over the shaft, allow the seal to centralize on the shaft before tightening the housing.

bullet

Damaged shafts should be plunge ground and given a surface finish between 0.2 and 0.6um RA.

bullet

A new seal WILL leak if....

  1. The shaft has been marked in any way by the previous seal.

  2. If the shaft has been polished by hand with an abrasive material such as emery cloth. This often leaves microscopic scratches on the shaft which can damage the sealing lip.

  3. The crankcase pressure is above normal.

  4. The oil temperature is above normal.

  5. The engine has overheated.

  6. The shaft is bent or has radial movement.

  7. The shaft has excessive end float.

Any of these scenarios will damage the sealing lip and allow the seal to leak.
